Brandeis, Louis D. [(bran-deyes, bran-deyez)]

A judge of the twentieth century, he served on the Supreme Court from 1916 to 1939. Brandeis believed that economic and social facts had to take precedence over legal theory. He was the first Jew (see also Jews) to serve on the Supreme Court.
